Classical theater gets funky beat in international premiere The Revivalists 'Who do you think I am? "

29 SEPTEMBER 2014, 02 SEPTEMBER 2014, AMSTERDAM, GRONINGEN, ROTTERDAM, UTRECHT, THE HAGUE, EINDHOVEN SUMMARY
Summary
"Theatre is like jazz," say directors Marjorie Boston and Maarten van Hinte: "It’s about the mix, about the flow". The two already made urban theater before with ‘Nina Simone Alive!'. At October 4, their new show The Revivalists will have its world premiere at Bijlmer Parktheater in Amsterdam. Together with jazz-hiphop DJ Love Supreme and seven actors from South Africa, England and The Netherlands, classical European theatre texts take on a new dimension. In The Revivalists young artists from the Netherlands, England and South Africa dive into a number of major classical texts from European playwriting: The Bacchae of Euripides, Shakespeare's Othello, Mary Stuart by Schiller, The Cherry Orchard by Chekhov and An Enemy of the People by Ibsen. Dutch actor Mandela Wee Wee (known from Gone with the Wind and Mogadishu): "The change that my character Lepage goes through I also see in my own life. He also changes from an underdog into a man who achieved more than he had ever imagined".

The world as a construction site

The Revivalists literally shows a world under construction. A no-mans land where several characters from different corners of the world are condemned to each other. But it is also a construction site where they try to build a new identity with texts and stories from past and present. Classical texts, remixed and remastered. Which, in a surprising way join the world of the young theatre makers. Actor Chuma Sopotela: "Othello I first found absolutely not an interesting character at all, but we turned out to have many similarities. His insecurities are recognisable to me. Who is doing the right thing for you and who is fucking you up?"

From the Netherlands to the UK and to South Africa

The Revivalists is a production of Afrovibes, and will have its premiere in the lead up to the Afrovibes festival. It is an international collaboration between Theatre Arts Admin Collective in Cape Town, Afrovibes Festival, RIGHTABOUTNOW INC. in The Netherlands and The Albany in Britain. The show will have its world premiere on October 4 in Bijlmer Parktheater and will than go on tour in the other two countries. Boston: "It was inspiring to work with artists from three countries, each having their own language, their own style of performing and expression. Even though everybody has different roots, their emotions, desires and motivations were all exactly the same".

Poetry Circle Nowhere

After or preceding the performance of The Revivalists in Rotterdam, Eindhoven, Groningen and Amsterdam you will experience an extra performance, which is based on The Revivalists. Poetry Circle Nowhere is a group of young performers inspired by writing and performing. They will work on the theme of identity and ‘the other and you’ inspired by The Revivalists, directed by Mike van Wetten. A tantalising combination of words, acting and sounds.
